Making time: ~2 hours

Materials needed:

  • Yarn, worsted weight, ~75 yds - in this tutorial, I used Bernat Super Value yarn scraps in an old, discontinued colourway (Plum Mist or something?)

    • You can find lots of other colours online, like this beautiful Dark Mauve

    • Other similar options with wide variety of colours: Lion Brand Basic Stitch, Vanna’s Choice

    • Or get creative with your stash and use some plush yarns with lots of wool for extra comfort, like this Knit Picks Preciosa Merino in a soft pastel!

  • Knitting needles, 6.5mm or similar size to keep the stitches loose enough for a bit of stretch

    • You can use any type (straight, circular, DPN), my video uses DPNs

    • I got a really cost-effective DPN set on Amazon, not high quality but you get all the sizes affordably which is so important!

  • Seaming Tools, either:

    • A crochet hook appropriately sized for your yarn weight - I used a 5mm in my video, I prefer metal hooks (mine are these!) OR

    • A tapestry needle for sewing OR

    • A 3rd needle for a 3 needle bind off

  • Scissors

  • Tapestry needle for finishing

Headband

Cast on 16 stitches using any method. I used a standard long tail cast on in my video. It does not need to be stretchy.

Setup Row: knit (k) all stitches

Pattern Repeat Rows:
Row 1: k4, (p2, k4) twice
Row 2: k4, (k1, m1, k1, k4) twice
Row 3: k4, (p3, k4) twice
Row 4: k4 (sl st, k2, pull sl st off right needle over the 2 knitted stitches on right hand needle, k4) twice

Repeat Rows 1-4 17 MORE times (18 repeats total)
The finished length should be ~16” long and ~4” wide. You can change the number of repeats to fit smaller/larger heads!

Bind off, leaving a long tail for seaming

Holding right sides together, seam raw edges, either by sewing (running stitch), crochet (sl st) or join using a 3 needle bind off (requires picking up stitches).
The seam will be hidden by the bowtie band.
Fasten off.

Bowtie Band

Cast on 6 stitches using any method.
Knit 10 rows stockinette stitch (k right sights, p wrong sides)
Bind off in pattern, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Finishing

Loop over the headband with the wrong side facing, covering the headband seam.
Seam across to form a loop using a running stitch or a crocheted sl st seam.
Flip right side out and place over the seam of the headband, shaping the headband by pinching the mock cable rows together.

It’s a good idea to sew the bow band in place so it doesn’t slide away from covering the seam of the headband!
